Losing Independence As You Age
“The greatest wealth is health.”
The Quiet Realization
There’s a moment, often unspoken, when people begin to notice things aren’t as easy as they used to be. Maybe it’s when the stairs feel steeper, the grocery bags heavier, or the house harder to clean. They might tell themselves it’s just a bad day, but deep down, they know—it’s a shift.
For many women in their 50s, 60s, and beyond, this realization comes with a mix of emotions: frustration, sadness, and sometimes fear. After a lifetime of independence, the idea of needing help with daily tasks—grocery shopping, cleaning, even meal preparation—feels like a tiny death. Something precious is lost forever.
This shift means finding new ways to preserve energy and resources for what matters most, whether it’s spending time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies, or simply enjoying life’s quieter moments.
Along with the psychological and emotional shifts, there are also financial shifts that sometimes need to be made. Home care, personal assistance, or modifications to make your home safer can add up quickly. Without a plan, the costs can feel overwhelming.
In today’s newsletter, I’ll share some steps you can take to help navigate the financial burden that can come with losing independence, and make smart financial choices when it feels like the costs are stacking up.
Step One: Understand the Financial Reality
When it comes to maintaining independence, knowledge is power. Start by understanding the costs and options available:
Evaluate Your Needs.
Do you need help with personal care, household chores, transportation, or meal preparation? Knowing where you need assistance helps you plan effectively.Understand the Costs.
In-home assistance: $20–$50/hour for personal care or housekeeping.
24/7 home health care: Over $100,000/year.
Home modifications: Varies by project, but even small changes can add up.
Know What Insurance Covers.
Medicare often doesn’t cover routine in-home care or custodial services.
Medicaid or VA benefits may help, but eligibility is limited.
Step Two: Proactively Manage the Financial Burden
Facing these costs doesn’t have to feel like climbing a mountain. Here are steps to lighten the load:
Reassess Your Budget.
Identify discretionary spending you can reallocate (e.g., dining out, subscriptions).
Prioritize funds for caregiving or home modifications.
📖 Learn how to align your retirement budget with your values.
Consider Long-Term Care Insurance.
If you don’t already have it, explore policies that cover in-home care, assisted living, or nursing facilities.
If you have a policy, review it to ensure adequate coverage.
Explore Government Assistance.
Medicaid: Check if you meet income and asset thresholds for assistance.
Veterans Benefits: Programs like Aid and Attendance can help with care costs.
Set Up a “Care Fund.”
Open a separate savings account or contribute to an HSA (if eligible) to cover future care costs.
Step Three: Adjust Your Living Situation
If maintaining your current home becomes challenging, consider alternatives:
Downsize.
Selling your home and moving to a smaller, more manageable space can free up funds and reduce maintenance costs.Explore Assisted Living.
Assisted living facilities provide care and companionship, often at a lower cost than full-time in-home care.
📖 Discover how to choose the right assisted living facility.
Step Four: Build a Support Network
You don’t have to do this alone. Lean on your community and family to create a plan that works for everyone:
Talk to Family.
Discuss your future care needs with loved ones. They may be willing to help financially or with routine tasks.
Create a clear plan to set expectations.
Stay Connected.
Join local groups or faith communities for companionship and support.
Volunteer or explore hobbies that bring joy and purpose.
Celebrate Progress.
Acknowledge each step you take toward building a plan. Whether it’s organizing finances or finding the right resources, every action counts.
